On the ice

The wind out on the ice is freezing. Jakob has gone out for the day to scout for seals. He has taken only the bare essentials with him: his rifle, his seal hunter’s ski, his tube binoculars, his seal spear and his sealskin bag containing provisions for the day. If the day is successful and Jakob is able to kill a seal, then he will take it back to the expedition basecamp, where it will be cut up. The skin and blubber – both valuable parts of the animal – will be carefully taken care of.
